Nature's Light Show
Just before the Sun set for the final time we were treated to all kinds of weird optical phenomena caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere and the Sun being so low in the sky. Here are a few examples of some of the things we've seen.
We regularly get mirages on the horizon which let us see icebergs at the coast and other features even though they're not normally visible. They are caused by changes in the air temperature due to the cold snow surface. These pictures show how the nearby McDonald Ice Rumples changed over the course of an afternoon.
