A Local Tour
A set of pictures showing some features of the Brunt Ice Shelf (where Halley is located), from the base perimeter to the Hinge Zone 40 kilometres away.
Following the coast to the west of Creek 2 leads to Windy Bay, a particularly sheltered bay which is used by the local Emperor penguin population as an annual nesting site. Each year several thousand birds gather to breed and rear their chicks. This picture is taken from the top of the cliffs looking down on the colony.
