Packing up

The ship is cruising across the Weddell Sea and due to arrive at Halley tomorrow morning, so I've been busy packing up my remaining belongings. I got rid of a lot of my stuff when the ship arrived at the end of December so it didn't take me too long to get my remaining belongings together.

Luggage packed and ready to go.

It feels very surreal getting ready to leave here for good. Apart from a couple of nights in the field during my first summer I've spent the last 784 days on the Brunt Ice Shelf and I've definitely come to think of the place as my home. Although I'm sad to go (particularly as in all likelihood I'll never come back here), I am very much looking forward to catching up with my friends and family back in the Real World.

Of course it's going to take quite a bit of time to get back to the UK from here, around about a month in fact. First we've got 20 days on the ship sailing north to the Falkland Islands. On the way back we'll be visiting the other BAS bases at Signy, Bird Island and South Georgia so I'm hoping we'll get the chance to get ashore for a bit of sightseeing. After that I'll be on the Falkland Islands for a few days before getting an RAF flight back to the UK via Ascension Island.
