Sun up
After 105 days of darkness the sun has once again returned at Halley. We saw our first distorted and miraged beams of sunshine the week before last then shortly after that we caught our first glimpse of the disc of the sun poking above the horizon.
Last Sunday we had the traditional sun-up ceremony, which mirrors the events of sun-down in that the youngest member of the base raises a new flag and gives a little speech. That duty fell to Miriam this year which she completed in fine style. Not only did she rig the flag so it could be pulled free once it reached the top of the flagpole but she read out a great Inuit story about how the sun first came to shine on the eskimos.

Since then we've had more great skies, but are now in the middle of a 60 knot gale, the biggest of the year so far, which has put pay to our plans to celebrate sun up by firing off some out of date flares and having a big barbecue. Oh well, maybe next weekend.
