Sno-cat Archaeology

The weather finally cleared up today after 5 days of strong winds and blowing snow. There's nothing unusual about storms like that, in fact it is pretty common to get gales from the east for several days at a time.

Because everything left on the surface tends to get covered, Gareth (our Vehicle Mechanic) tries to keep the vehicles in places where they'll survive the worst of the weather without getting too buried. During the winter most of the vehicles are put away, either on large mounds of snow (in the case of the sno-cats and cranes), on sledges or on top of containers (for the skidoos).

We still need to use a couple of vehicles during the winter so he usually keeps them to the west of the garage. Since most strong wind comes from the east a wind scoop is created which usually keeps that area relatively clear.

Unfortunately the last big gale seems to have come from a slightly different direction to normal and instead of staying clear it dumped a whole load of fresh snow behind the garage where a sno cat was parked. Here's what it looked like this morning:

Snow cat that was buried by blowing snow.
All this snow appeared in the last 5 days.

Digging out a buried snow cat.
The sno cat after several hours of digging. The tracks still needed to be cleared before it could be moved.
